Textos en inglés – Thanksgiving and Black Friday

Hello and happy Thanksgiving!

Ya estamos en noviembre…

Y para celebrarlo mejor, tengo un par de textos en inglés que compartir hoy: uno sobre Acción de Gracias, y el otro sobre Black Friday.

Por supuesto que Acción de Gracias es uno de los festivos más importantes en Estados Unidos.

Y Black Friday, aunque no sea un día que se celebra de forma oficial, es importante también para los negocios.

Así que hoy, tengo un par de textos y videos que explican las típicas tradiciones en estas fechas.

(En la foto soy algo más joven y mucho más delgado… y además, me había afeitado poco antes… ¡Qué tiempos, aquellos!)

Thanksgiving (Acción de Gracias)

Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays for people in the US. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

The tradition says that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated between Pilgrims and Indians in the Plymouth colony in 1621. The Pilgrims were a group of very religious people from England who had come to the New World to escape persecution.

They wanted to reach Virginia but due to bad weather on the high seas, their ship ended up much further north, in what is now Massachussets.

After the first cold, difficult winter they met the local Indians, who helped them plant crops and survive in the new environment. The celebration in autumn was meant to thank God for the harvest and for the abundance of the New World.

What happened after that is a long story.

Today, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. Most people spend the day with their families, and use the day to give thanks for the good things in their lives.

Canadians also celebrate Thanksgiving, but they do it in October.

Personally, I love Thanksgiving, even here in Spain. It’s a great excuse to get together with friends, eat good food, and drink a lot of Spanish wine. I’m very thankful for the life I have in Spain, and for all the good friends I’ve met here. And the celebration is a reminder of that.

Vocabulario sobre Acción de Gracias en inglés y español

Nota cultural: turkey el animal es igual que Turkey el país. Lo que pasa es que hubo algo de confusión hace cuatro siglos, y se pensó en Inglaterra que los pavos venían de Turquía. Y así seguimos, muchos años después.

Aquí el vocabulario…

Pilgrim = peregrino

crops = cultivos

harvest = cosecha

turkey = pavo

mashed potatoes = puré de patatas

pumpkin = calabaza

get together = juntarse

Texto en Inglés: Black Friday

Thanksgiving is always celebrated on Thursday, and the day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday.

Black Friday is the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, and a lot of stores give large discounts to customers who are willing to spend the night standing in line.

Personally, I don’t think I ever went shopping on Black Friday. I preferred to celebrate Buy Nothing Day on the same day. But Americans go crazy for shopping because life in the USA is otherwise sort of boring. We don’t have much to do besides work and shop.

In recent years, the media has made a big deal out of people who get hurt in stampedes of shoppers on Black Friday. I suppose the stories are true, but in a country as big as the USA, a lot of strange things happen. If you want, you can watch this video about the worst Black Friday Disasters.

Otherwise, don’t worry. If you visit the US on Black Friday, you probably won’t die in a shopping-related accident.

(The USA also has a lot of gun-related violence, but statistically, it’s very unlikely that YOU will be shot. So don’t worry. Just go. It’s not that dangerous.)

Another interesting fact: in the US, we celebrate most of our holidays on Monday. Thanksgiving is on a Thursday and it creates a long weekend for many people, who also take the day off on Friday.

Here in Spain, some businesses have started celebrating Black Friday as well. However, in Spain, they often celebrate for the whole weekend.

Vocabulario sobre Black Friday en inglés y español

Aquí tienes un poco de vocabulario del texto sobre Black Friday. Primero…

Nota cultural: Lo de los “puentes” como fin de semana largo es algo que generalmente no tenemos en Estados Unidos. Thanksgiving es más o menos el único, como explico ahí.

Y bueno.

Sobre la violencia, es verdad que muchos americanos se mueren en tiroteos comparado con países como Canadá. Pero realmente no es algo de que debes preocuparte si visitas como turista.

(Lo menciono porque mucha gente me pregunta si realmente debería visitar Estados Unidos, o si es demasiado arriesgado.)

Aquí el vocabulario:

beginning = principio

discounts = descuentos

willing = dispuesto

otherwise = de todas formas

go crazy = volverse loco. Más expresiones con CRAZY aquí.

make a big deal out of something = crear un escándalo, hacer que algo parezca importante. Parece que la palabra deal tiene como 20 traducciones al español.

stampedes = estampidas

long weekend = puente (por supuesto que “puente” también es bridge, pero cuando se habla de un fin de semana de varios días, se dice long weekend.)
