¡Hola de nuevo!
Hoy quería hablar un poco más de la política.
De hecho, estaba trabajando en una lista de palabras para usar cuando hablamos de la política en inglés, pero al final es un tema tan grande que decidí hacerlo por partes.
Así pues, hoy tenemos unos textos para hablar de la política en inglés: un texto sobre el sistema político en España y otro sobre el sistema en Estados Unidos.
Como no soy experto en ciencias políticas, he basado lo que he escrito en los artículos de Wikipedia y lo que sé de vivir en ambos países.
Después de cada texto tienes un poco de explicación del vocabulario relevante.

Texto en inglés: The Spanish Political System
Spain is a country in Western Europe. Officially the Kingdom of Spain, it’s a constitutional monarchy. The head of state is King Felipe VI, and the current Prime Minister is Pedro Sánchez.
The current Constitution was signed in 1978, and it establishes 17 Autonomous Communities, as well as the two Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on the north coast of the African continent. Most of Spain’s territory is on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, but it also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
Spain has a multi-party political system, and is currently governed by a coalition of left-wing parties. Elections are usually held every four years. The Prime Minister is officially known as the President of the Government. He governs with the help of the Deputy Prime Ministers and the heads of the various Ministries. Laws are made by the Congress of Deputies and the Senate.
The Autonomous Communities have a large amount of freedom to govern themselves. Besides Spanish, there are other official languages: Euskera in the Basque Country, Catalan and Aranese in Catalonia, Valencian and Galician, as well as other un-official regional languages.
Most Autonomous Communities are further divided into provinces – Spain has a total of 50 provinces. The provinces are further divided into municipalities: towns and cities, each governed by a local mayor and a City Hall.

Como siempre, nos toca hablar del género un poco. La mayoría de los puestos políticos no tienen género: president, prime minister o senator pueden ser o varón o mujer.
La nobleza es diferente en este caso, porque tenemos kings, queens, princes, princesses, dukes, duchesses etc.
Sobre Felipe VI, solo quería mencionar que tengo un artículo sobre números ordinales que te puede ayudar con lo de VI, que en inglés acaba siendo “the Sixth”.
Aquí en Barcelona llevamos varios años con la alcaldesa Ada Colau, oficialmente existe la palabra de mayoress, pero hoy en día me suena muy anticuado, prefiero mayor para ambos géneros.
Texto sobre la política en inglés: Politics in the United States
The United States of America is a federal republic and representative democracy. There are two main political parties in the USA, called the Republicans and the Democrats.
The government is divided into three branches: the Executive Branch, which includes the President and his Cabinet; the Legislative Branch, which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives, and the Judicial Branch, which includes the Supreme Court and other federal courts.
As a federal republic, each of the 50 states has its own government and constitution. Each state also has its own governor. The President is elected indirectly, every four years, through the Electoral College. The Twenty-second Amendment to the Constitution establishes a limit of two terms as President. Current president Joe Biden is on his first term.
In addition to the 50 states, the USA has a Federal District – the capital, Washington DC, and several overseas territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and American Samoa.
The US has no official language, but English is spoken by most people. Other important languages in the US include Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, indigenous languages like Navajo, and many, many more.

Algunas palabras de la política no son muy difíciles de adivinar. Que “republic” sea “república” no tiene mucho misterio.

En Estados Unidos no tenemos nobleza, así el tema de género es un poco más fácil. Las palabras Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (presidente del Tribunal Supremo), Attorney General (fiscal general del estado) o bien Speaker of the House (presidente de la Cámara de Representantes) son completamente neutros.

En fin. Espero que te hayan gustado los textos sobre la política. Hay mucho más que se puede decir sobre el tema… como dije, estoy trabajando en un artículo con una lista más larga de vocabulario, pero es un tema más grande de lo que pensaba.
